Here are the details for tomorrow night's first installment of Serve. Adventure. Study!

7:00 pm Meet in the Agora, for a Scavenger Hunt with a Twist (Come dressed for the weather - part of the hunt will be held outside.)

7: 45 pm Meet in the Agora, Intro to S.A.S/ Bible Study on 1 and 2 Samuel

8:30 pm Meet at Siobhan's house for Shelter House pizza-making!

Feel free to come for all or part of the evening! (Although you will get the most benefit by coming out to the whole thing. :)

Also, several people have expressed concern that they may not be able to come out every time S.A.S meets. There is no obligation to come out every time, so please, come out when you can, and don't worry about the rest!

We will continue to meet once or twice a month, and I will endeavour to have a schedule like the one above posted at least a week in advance, so that everyone knows what will be happening and where we will be meeting.

New Bible Study!

I hope the new semester is going well for everyone...

We will be starting a new Bible study next week, called "Serve, Adventure, Study" (or S.A.S). It will be for both men and women, and depending on schedules, will take place once or twice a month, probably on Saturdays. There will be an ongoing study on 1 and 2 Samuel, an opportunity to volunteer as a group with an organization off-campus, and an adventure component as well (skating, climbing, winter camping, hiking, and possibly polar dips!).

If you are interested, please respond to lucfmail@gmail.com and let me know. My aim is to keep this fairly flexible so that everyone who wishes to can participate! And I will confirm meeting times next Friday when we meet as a large group.

Skating on Lake Tamblyn

Hi Gang;

This Friday, meet on Lake Tamblyn (behind Centennial Building, beside Prettie Residence) for a night of ice adventures! Bring skates and a hockey stick if you have them. We'll be skating (or sliding with boots) and hopefully getting a hockey game going. If there aren't enough skates or sticks, we may just play boot hockey. Whether you have equipment or not, come out and have a great time.

Dress warmly!

If you don't feel like being outside, we'll have a side-room set up inside where people can hang out, have hot chocolate and enjoy the view. (Open room that looks out at the lake - can be accessed both from outside by Lake Tamblyn, or by going down the steps at the back of the Agora)

He recently published a book called "The Greatest Hoax on Earth" which is a Creationist refute to evolution. If you are at all interested in the topic, I would recommend attending.

Retreat!

The time has come for our Fall Retreat! It is this coming weekend (1-3 October 2010) at Dorion Bible Camp. The cost is $40 which covers accommodation and food. Bigger or Better

This Friday (24 September), we will meet in the Agora at 7 pm and head out from there to play Bigger or Better! The purpose of this game is to start with a small item and go door-to-door trading that item for something bigger or better than the item that you have. All final items will either be donated for charity or used as a fundraiser for the club.

And if you aren't comfortable with that option, there is also a movie playing across from security called "Poverty no More", as well as a concert in The Study titled "Concert for the Cure".

After Bigger or Better, we'll get back together and hear some testimonies from this year's exec.

Although I doubt Friday night will be filled with madness, it'll be a great time to come out and catch up with old friends, maybe meet some new friends, and fellowship together as the body of Christ on campus. So here's the plan:

Thursday, 9 September: Large game at the Bora Laskin Field, 7-10 pm. Currently, we'll play ultimate frisbee or soccer, but if you have the equipment for another game, or have an idea for another game, we could do that to!

Friday, 10 September: Worship night beside Lake Tamblyn. Meet at 7 pm between Lake Tamblyn and Prettie Residence if it is sunny, or in the Agora if it is raining. Bring instruments and your singing voice.

I am a complete newbie to the sport so even if you haven't been practicing you should still be coming out... we will have hangout time after the game too!

The Voyage That Shook The World

Happy Birthday Jesus!

Hi all,
Katie here. I hope that you are all enjoying your holidays and have had the chance to relax these past few days. I also am hoping that along with surrounding yourselves with friends, family and those you love that you are able to take some time and surround yourself in the presence of our Lord. Other than wishing you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year I wanted to share with you what I have been learning these holidays. My pastor in Kenora, Allan Rundel, shared a very powerful message on Sunday, one that I would like to share with you.
The passage he focused on was John 3:1-15. With John 3:16 being as popular as it is, I was surprised t how often I have skimmed over its prelude. In John 3:1-2 Nicodemus, a Pharisee, is speaking with Jesus, calling Jesus a teacher and acknowledging that God is with him. This is very similar to our society where many people will say that Jesus was a prophet or a man with good ideas and morals, but never agreeing to Jesus as Lord.
But Jesus will change this view as he does when responding to Nicodemus in John 3:3. Here Jesus tells Nicodemus who He is by telling Nicodemus that no one can enter heaven unless he is born again. Nicodemus tries pulling out some legalism things such as actually going into the womb once again and Jesus just tells him straight out that focus on worldly things isn't going to get him anywhere and that if he cannot understand this he won't ever enter the kingdom. This part really shows the fact that no one deserves entrance to heaven, no amount of power, prestige, popularity, salvation is a gift, one we cannot earn and one that we do not deserve.
Ending with John 3:15, Jesus declares that belief in the son of man is the way to have eternal life. This is where my attention has been in my own studies. When Jesus talks about belief in Him, he is not discussing just saying "yah, Jesus is God" belief is more than acknowledgment, belief is a demonstration of that knowledge. This is where our lives need to show that Jesus did more than save us, he changed us and this needs to be reflected in the way we live. Worshiping Jesus in our lives is more than words its actions and just wow.
So speaking on behalf of LUCF I am so excited for how this change will be reflected in us in 2010. So everyone Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, safe travels and we will see you soon!

Hi Friends!

This Friday was open, so we'll give you some suggestions and you can decide where you want to go.

First Baptist Church is having a movie night starting at 8pm, so if you want to go maybe meet in the Agora around 7:30 and walk over together or just show up at the church.
The church is located on 1314 Oliver Road (down the road from LU, past Katie Mack's place - where we had the bonfire the first night - past Tim Hortons)
Snacks will be provided and you can bring blankets/pillows etc. for comfort.

The FOCUS club, which is the Fellowship of Overseas College and University Students also meets at 7pm Fridays. They meet in the Ryan Building on-campus in RB 3026 (3rd floor) Friendly people and they said they'll have snacks too :)

Just wanted to clarify that we will be in the Agora between 7am and 8am tomorrow morning to kick things off with worship! We'll have some breakfast goodies available there too!

We'll then move outside to the flagpole for some heavy-duty prayer time. Bring warm clothing!

(Members of the worship team: please be in the Agora no later than 6:15am - mikes and amp will not be set up for us, we'll have to do it ourselves! I'll be at Security at 6am to pick up the equipment.)

Come to Round Lake Bible Camp and "Grab Your Armour"... Sept. 25 to 27

We'll be having great workshops, worship, prayer, solo time, outdoor activities, food and fellowship! (Also, Saturday night we'll be having a Talent/Non-Talent Show, so prepare something hilarious.)

Meet us in the Agora at 1830h Friday to carpool to the camp! We will be returning to Thunder Bay after lunch on Sunday.

Sleeping Giant Camping Trip

Hi gang,

Here's the info for the 2nd annual summer trip to Sleepy G:

Departure: 6:00 pm, July 31, Agora, LU

Return: 6:00 pm, August 3, Agora, LU

Approx. 40-60 kilometres of hiking, scrambling, swimming and other fun stuff - will be moderately physically challenging, but may be tailored so that everyone will have a good time!

A gear list will be emailed out to participants - please contact me if you have any questions...

Cost: $40.00 per person (to cover camping fees, gas and food).

* Rides will be provided - if you'd like to drive out to the park and provide rides for others, please let me know. We'll reimburse your gas costs. *

Ratification of New Executive

The selection committee is still waiting to hear back from a few key nominees (hopefully by Tuesday) before contacting the remaining candidates. For the latter group, we appreciate your patience - please be assured we will be in touch by phone by Wednesday evening!

We will be holding a special, mandatory meeting Thursday, April 2 to ratify the final candidates and review the structure of the new executive. This will be held at UC 2017 (the LUCF office) between 6:00 pm and 7:00 pm. Pizza and other goodies will be served!

As you may have noticed, the next couple of weeks are jam-packed with good things! Here are a few details for each of them...

Monday, Feb. 9 - Evening Prayer at 6:00 pm - We've temporarily changed the time to see if this will allow more people to participate in our campus prayer time. Meet at the south end of the AGORA (opposite from the main entrance).

Tuesday, Feb. 10 - Women's Bible Study at 7:00 pm - Due to smaller numbers this week, we will be doing a prayer walk/bible study this week, both on- and off-campus. Meet outside RC 1001, and come dressed appropriately for the weather. Hot chocolate will be served afterwards.

Friday, Feb. 13 - First Annual Old Testament Games at 7:00 pm - Come to RC 1001 and test your knowledge of the OT! Bring comfortable clothes (helmet optional!) and prepare to have some wild and crazy fun!

Sunday, Feb. 15 - Lunch for Kristin Thomson and Andrew Lang at 1:00 pm, Faith Chapel, 193 Bruce Street. If you know this soon-to-be married couple, please come and celebrate with them!

Friday, Feb. 20 - Snow Day at the Howards' (6:30-9:30 pm) - The Howard family (Pastor Gene, Terry and offspring) have invited us to come to their house in the woods for a fun evening of sledding, carpet-rides, worship and snacks. (Bring snowpants or a dry change of clothing.) We will leave LU at 6:30 pm from the AGORA. Hi gang,

It's that time of year again, where we look ahead to next year's exec!

The six positions available are: Overall Coordinator, Outreach Coordinator, Large Group Coordinator, Small Group/Retreat Coordinator, Communications/Finance Coordinator and Worship Coordinator. (Each position is held for one year.)

If you know someone you would like to nominate for a position, please pray and seek God's will about it! Consider their relationships with Him, their gifts, passions, and current ability to handle smaller responsibilities...

A nomination committee will be set up shortly, who will carefully screen all nominees and interview the leading candidates. The final six nominees will be approved by all LUCF members towards the end of March.

Spotlight: Africa

Over the next few days, we will be taking a special look at the African continent - particularly some of the ways we can become personally involved.

This Friday, Nov. 21, Katie Harwood will present Blood:Water Mission, which focusses on reducing the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Africa (clean blood), and providing drinkable water (clean water) to millions of people. (7:00 pm at RC 1001)

Next week, LUSU club Africa Matters will be hosting a pancake breakfast for World Aids Day, as well as a special benefit concert. Stay tuned for more details!

Worship Through Serving

Hi everyone! This November, we will be continuing our theme of living lives of worship - every day! This week, come and listen to a special guest speaker from New Hope Youth Centre as he talks about how we can worship God by helping others.

The following week, we will put the concepts into practice here in the city! We will learn about serving those in other countries on the 21st, and finally, on Nov. 28th (last day of classes!), we will gather together for our annual Christmas feast. And yes, the feast will have some special opportunities to serve each other, as well as those in the community who may need a little extra support during the holidays.

Please join us as we continue to explore what it means to be a follower of Christ in the world we live in today...

Hi folks,

Christine Hildred, Food Bank Coordinator extraordinaire , is looking for non-perishable food donations (especially pasta and canned vegetables). If you can help out, bring your donations to the food bank directly, or to our Scripture study at RC1001 tomorrow night.

Another way to show your support for the Food Bank is to come to the "People's Potato", a hot, free lunch served every Thursday at the Food Bank (near the Junction convenience store) from 1:30pm to 3:30pm. The meal is donated by the Outpost - yummy!. (Please bring your own container and fork if you'd like to eat, or just come by to hang out...)

Fall Retreat!

Well, it's that time of year... the fall retreat is only a few days away!

We are going to Camp Gitchigomee on Friday afternoon, for a weekend of prayer, fellowship, and enjoying God's creation around us. There will also be lots of good food, adventures, and music! You won't want to miss it!

Gitchigomee is located about an hour out of Thunder Bay, not far from Nolalu. If you need a ride, or would like to provide a vehicle, please contact Andrew Lang, Retreat Coordinator, at lang_andrew@hotmail.com. The cost for the weekend will be $40.o0, plus $5.00 for gas to your driver. (If you need some assistance to meet the cost of the trip, please contact me at nlees@lakeheadu.ca. All requests will be confidential.)

We will be emailing out a list of things to bring with you on Wednesday, so check your email at that time!

Volunteer Opportunity: New Hope Fellowship & Native Ministries

Hi everyone!

We have just received a letter from Mr. Scott Penner, the Coordinator at New Hope. He has invited LUCF to participate in several volunteer opportunities with the various youth ministries run by this church!

Here is a partial list:

setting up a youth art program
setting up a new website
worship nights
Bible studies

New Hope is open Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, from 6pm to 11pm. The youth are ages 13 to 25 (although Scott tells us that most are 16 or 17). This is a wonderful opportunity to live out the Commission Christ gave us! This Friday (tomorrow), we are having an outdoor picnic! We'll be meeting on the lawn between Oliver Road and the Bora Laskin Education building at 5:30pm.

Foodwise, if your FIRST name begins with the letters A to D, please bring a main dish. Letters E to N, a dessert, and letters O to Z, something to drink. (The distribution is as fair as I could make it ;)) Feel free to pair up with someone if you wish!

So I've been working my way through Isaiah for the last month, and today I read chapter 52. Here's a quote that I really like:

"How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news,

who proclaim peace, who bring good tidings, who proclaim salvation,

who say to Zion, "Your God reigns!"

Listen! Your watchmen lift up their voices; together they shout for joy.

When the Lord returns to Zion, they will see it with their own eyes.

Burst into songs of joy together, you ruins of Jerusalem.

The Lord will lay bare his holy arm in the sight of all the nations,

and all the ends of the earth will see the salvation of God."

Isaiah 52:7-10

What really caught my attention in this quote was that it tells us what fruits will come when we declare God's name, when we are not ashamed to tell the world about our God. People need hints to see God, and when they get pointed in the right direction, they will see his majesty. May we show everyone God's love through our words and actions so that they may see him.

The women's study will take place at 178 Varsity Row (near Balmoral and Academy). We are hoping to have some special guests with us...
